Keeping Kids Active

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, a time to focus on the health and well-being of our children. At Kids First Pediatrics, we are committed to helping children of all ages and stages maintain a healthy weight and develop lifelong healthy habits.

Childhood obesity is a serious problem that can lead to health problems later in life, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), "nearly one in five children and adolescents in the United States are obese."

There are many factors that contribute to child obesity, including diet, physical activity, sleep, and screen time. Here at Kids First Pediatrics, we know that it can be challenging for parents to help their children make healthy choices in today's world.

But there are things you can do to promote healthy habits daily in your home:

  • Make healthy food choices: Limit sugary drinks and processed foods, and offer plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Get active together: Make physical activity a family affair. Go for walks, hikes, or bike rides together. Limit screen time for children and encourage them to participate in active hobbies.

  • Get enough sleep: Children need adequate sleep for both physical and mental health. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine.
